In this article, I introduce “VR GALLERY BUNKA GAKUEN UNIV. 36th Fashion Show”, a VR gallery of the fashion show “Freedom” organized by the Department of Fashion Creation, Bunka Gakuen University. VR GALLERY” BUNKA GAKUEN UNIV.

I introduce the efforts of the Department of Fashion Creation at Bunka Gakuen University and how the fashion show was incorporated into the VR exhibition.

In the fourth year, students in the department hold a graduation research project and a fashion show as the culmination of their studies in the department.
The fashion show is not only an opportunity to create works of art for self-expression, but also to learn the process of “recording, writing, summarizing, and presenting”.

The VR GALLERY introduced here can be considered as one “record”.

In fashion and artworks, how to archive them plays an important role in the information society.

With the diversification of media, how are they being recorded by using “VR” and “3DCG” instead of images and videos? This presentation will include recorded footage from a fashion show.

When you start up the scene, it starts from the entrance.

Proceeding through the entrance, you will find the main hall, and the main hall is dotted with booths from each collection.

Each booth contains a 3D scanned collection of students and props that match the theme of the collection.

This collection was shown in a fashion show.

The theme of this fashion show was “Freedom”. The collection shows the creativity of the students.

Each student has their own individual theme, and they create according to it.

If you watch the VR exhibit, you will see that the name of the theme is not listed on the booth.

There are no signs at the booths with the names of the themes.

However, by not having the name of the theme listed on the booths, we can use our imagination to see what the theme is all about.

Since VR allows you to freely observe the space, you can freely observe the booths, and speculate about how things are arranged and how they relate to the collection. What is this booth?

In this booth, there is a Supreme skateboard deck and a scanned Converse All Star. These are both items that symbolize “street”.

And in the collection created, there is a “stadium jacket” that reminds me of sports.

However, when I looked at the list of themes at the entrance, I found that this piece was “Dreamer”.

You can see that the work is about dreams.

In this way, by actively viewing the booth while using your imagination and comparing it to the actual theme, You are able to see what elements you had overlooked and what the artist’s intentions were. The exhibition room is located in the back of the building.

At the back of the exhibition room are the remaining 3D models, designs, and a teaser movie of the production process.

These viewing experiences are different from a fashion show.

At the same time, it is a new way of using media in “documentation” for the creators of fashion.

I think this work is a very good example of extending the relevance of fashion and VR exhibitions.

Most of the VR x fashion projects have been based on creating garments with 3DCG, or garments to be worn by virtual avatars. However, by observing and introducing VR as a medium in other ways and from other perspectives, I think we can expand the relevance of fashion and VR.

This work leads us to that possibility.
