In this article, I introduce the work “stand” by Yusuke Washimi, an artist who participated in NEWVIEW CYPHER 2021.
NEWVIEW CYPHER is a project in which artists and creators who are active in fields other than XR use STYLY to create XR.
Twelve artists and creators participate in this project, and we will be featuring reviews of their scenes in Pick Up Scene.
This time it’s the work of artist Yusuke Washimi.
About Yusuke Washimi
Born in Shizuoka in 1996. Graduated from the Fashion Course of the Department of Spatial Design at Musashino Art University. Currently enrolled in the Sculpture Course of the Graduate School of Art and Design, Musashino Art University. His work is driven by a strong desire to transform since his childhood. With the theme of “possession and transformation,” he creates and presents works that can be worn. He is exploring the possibilities of how we see everyday life.

Yusuke Washimi’s past works include “Volverg”, a show video that he created and directed himself.
About “Stand”
When the work is activated, a huge space with huge objects towering over it appears.
A group of objects with special shapes reminiscent of tentacles and dragon tails.
The awe-inspiring aura of these beings stands between our eyes in VR space.
The shape is reminiscent of a video game boss, and when viewed in VR, its presence is overwhelming.
The blue object in the center and the red objects that build up the space are, if you look closely, 3DCGs of sculptures created by Yusuke Washimi in reality.
This is a 3DCG of a sculpture created in real life, and the data is used to create a VR.
Washimi’s sculptures are both sculptures and fashion pieces that can be attached to the body.
Rather than completing the work with an exhibition or installation, he has attempted to integrate and expand it with the body through fashion.
It is an act of discovering space and the body as a medium and exploring how to transmit the work.
Stand can also be read as a work of exploration that converts real works into 3DCG data and represents that data in VR.
In virtual space, data can be replicated, and colors and material textures can be easily changed. And virtual space, VR, allows us to design space more extensively than normal real space.
These require an observant eye and an imaginative mind on how to perceive the virtual space and how to install the work in that virtual space.
The key is to view VR not as “content” but as a “medium”.
Washimi creates his works as sculptures and three-dimensional objects, and at the same time, how he expresses his works through the media is a structure that can be viewed from two different layers.
In addition to this VR work, he has challenged himself to create a structure that can be viewed from multiple angles, such as using 3DCG data, re-realization with a 3D printer, and augmented reality with AR through this CYPHER.

アナログで制作した自身の作品をスキャン→人物モデルに対しスケール感を変更し、身につけさせてみました。
その後、ARにて巨大なスケールで出力。
現実で制作したものが、こんなスケールで表現できることすごすぎる。

With the development of media technology, the media we deal with are becoming more diverse, and how artists deal with this media, and at the same time, how reality is changing, and how we can change it, will be a major theme in the future.
