In this article, I introduce the AR graphic work “Tokyo Girls’ Picture Scroll” by Menmeiz and Jenny kaori.
I will explain how they fused KAWAII culture into their graphic work using AR.
* “KAWAII” means “cute” in Japanese.
About “menmeiz”
The project “menmeiz”, which creates kawaii beyond generations and countries, and the illustrator JennyKaori, who draws girls’ inner strength in a fashionable way, have collaborated to create the Tokyo Girls of the 80s and 00s in the AR world.
Girls from each era dressed in unique fashions such as Lolita, Gal and ”Crow tribe” appear in your room.

About Tokyo Picture Scroll
When you start up a scene, the title screen and three city options will appear.
The stage is set in the three sub-centers of Tokyo, the city where culture is transmitted.
Tokyo Girls’ Picture Scroll is a work that allows you to experience Jenny Kaori’s “GIRL’S CULTURE” illustration work on the theme of the three cities through AR.
The feature of the scenes is the use of color. It colorfully reflects the fashion of today’s girls, and the iconic buildings of each city are displayed in the background.
Personally, I found it interesting! The scene in Shinjuku is the one I found interesting. The background of Shinjuku is the “Shinjuku LOFT” live music club.
Shinjuku LOFT is currently located in the center of Kabukicho.
It is a live house with a capacity of about 500 people, and in the past, big-name artists such as Tatsuro Yamashita and Southern All Stars have performed there.
The Shinjuku LOFT depicted by Jenny Kaori is actually the “pre-move” LOFT.
Jenny Kaori illustrates the store as it was in the Kotakibashi area of the west exit from 1976 to 1999.
Jenny Kaori’s illustration is a symbolic depiction of a cultural center that connects the past to the present by combining the appearance of the stores from that time with the current Kabukicho.
As I was looking at the work, I also realized how interesting it is as AR.
AR can be used to display artworks in a variety of locations, regardless of space.
For example, I displayed the work in a residential area near my house.
She hacked up the reality of everyday life by suddenly displaying intensely colored graphics in an otherwise plain and bleak landscape.
Normally, digital data is displayed on a monitor and has little opportunity to interact with real space.
However, with the advent of AR, we can view artworks in a variety of places, regardless of space. This is one of the interesting aspects of AR.
Many people live not in the center of the city, but in residential areas or in “bleak” real-life spaces with little popularity.
By displaying Tokyo Girl’s Picture Scroll in AR over that landscape, we can weave the colors of the city into the scenery we usually see.
AR graphics and KAWAII culture has the potential to turn our boring daily life into a new landscape through AR.
Let’s add new colors to our daily life.

I have explained how to appreciate the expression of AR x Graphic x KAWAII.
You may find new discoveries not only from the perspectives other than the above, but also by taking the time to appreciate them.
